Un testo che avanza un paragone storico ardito, ma per noi appropriato, tra l’insurrezione del ghetto di Varsavia (1943) e l’insurrezione del ghetto di Gaza (2023) – Red.
In April of 1943 the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto rose up to oppose Nazi Germany’s final effort to transport the remaining ghetto population to the gas chambers. The previous summer operation Grossaktion Warschau had ‘resettled’ some 250,000 of the between three and four hundred thousand people imprisoned in the Ghetto to the Treblinka extermination camp. This time the survivors decided to resist to the last, fighting ‘not to allow the Germans alone to pick the time and place of our deaths.’ The Nazi forces were ambushed by insurgents firing and throwing Molotov cocktails and hand grenades from alleyways, windows, sewers, ‘bunkers.’ 13,000 Jews were killed, ‘beaten by the flames, not the Germans,’ the survivors were deported, and the ghetto was destroyed, block by block.
The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was a heroic act of extreme resistance.
An intifada.
The refusal to die in silence in an ‘open-air prison,’ and a refusal to accept the world’s silence.
One year ago, the day after the Gaza Intifada, I wrote:
And now, in Gaza, the cattle have come out of their pen, suddenly. The sheep raise their heads. From time to time. I see this Rave Party two miles from Gaza — poor folk, they couldn’t hear the bullets coming, the music was too loud — as a perfect analogy to this: A Rave of Good Germans right outside the gate of Auschwitz, a Party so Wild it woke the Jews inside, who poured and roared outside the camp en masse and trampled them. How can you punish people already condemned to death?
Today we commemorate the victims of this Rave, which the New York Times called ‘a quest for carefree normalcy met with murderous fury.’ Two miles from the Gate of Gaza, where ‘carefree normalcy’ is the norm. As it was in the Warsaw Ghetto.
The only decent Italian politician I know of said a few days ago: ‘Ho sentito dire che il 7 ottobre è stato un tentativo di Olocausto e allora quello che è successo per 12 mesi a Gaza cosa è?

L’Intifada del ghetto
Nell’aprile del 1943 gli ebrei del ghetto di Varsavia insorsero per opporsi al tentativo della Germania nazista di portare la restante popolazione del ghetto verso le camere a gas. L’operazione dell’estate precedente Grossaktion Warschau aveva “reinsediato” nel campo di sterminio di Treblinka circa 250.000 delle tre-quattrocentomila persone imprigionate nel ghetto. Questa volta i sopravvissuti decisero di resistere fino all’ultimo, combattendo “per non permettere ai tedeschi di scegliere loro il momento e il luogo della nostra morte”. Le forze naziste subirono un’imboscata da parte degli insorti, che spararono e lanciarono bottiglie molotov e bombe a mano da vicoli, finestre, fogne, “bunker”. 13.000 ebrei furono uccisi, “vinti dalle fiamme, non dai tedeschi”, i sopravvissuti furono deportati e il ghetto fu distrutto, isolato dopo isolato.
La rivolta del ghetto di Varsavia fu un atto eroico di estrema resistenza.
Un’intifada.
Il rifiuto di morire in silenzio in una “prigione a cielo aperto”, e il rifiuto di accettare il silenzio del mondo.
Un anno fa, il giorno dopo l’Intifada di Gaza, ho scritto:
“E ora, a Gaza, il “bestiame” è uscito dal suo recinto, all’improvviso. Le pecore alzano la testa. Di tanto in tanto. Vedo il Rave Party a due miglia da Gaza – oh, povera gente, non riuscivano a sentire arrivare i proiettili, la musica era troppo alta – come una perfetta analogia con quest’altro: un Rave di buoni tedeschi proprio fuori dal cancello di Auschwitz, un party così selvaggio che svegliò gli ebrei all’interno, che si riversarono e ruggirono in massa fuori dal campo e li calpestarono. Come è possibile punire persone già condannate a morte?”.
Oggi commemoriamo le vittime di questo Rave, che il New York Times ha definito “una ricerca di normalità spensierata accolta con furia omicida”. A due miglia dalla Porta di Gaza, dove la “normalità spensierata” è la norma. Come nel ghetto di Varsavia.
L’unico politico italiano decente che io conosca ha affermato qualche giorno fa: “Ho sentito dire che il 7 ottobre è stato un tentativo di olocausto, e allora quello che è successo per 12 mesi a Gaza cosa è?”.
