Arriva da Pechino la notizia di un accordo tra tutte le principali fazioni palestinesi per “porre fine alla divisione nazionale palestinese: unificare gli sforzi nazionali per affrontare l’aggressione e fermare la guerra del genocidio”. L’accordo è stato subito salutato dal Teheran Times (non sappiamo con quanta convinzione) come un successo della diplomazia del “dragone giallo” che finalmente entra da protagonista sulla scena politica mondiale con una proposta di soluzione della “questione palestinese” .
Insomma la Cina di Xi Jin Ping, che la sciagurata genìa dei campisti considera il capofila dell’“asse del bene”, ce l’ha fatta! Ce l’ha fatta a spingere Hamas e le altre forze della strenua resistenza palestinese all’azione genocida di Israele, a stringere la mano alla cricca di Abu Mazen, che è di fatto una protesi della macchina di morte sionista. Pochi giorni fa proprio Abu Mazen, in una dichiarazione che era un concentrato di meschinità, aveva accusato Yahya Sinwar, cioè in fondo la resistenza armata all’occupante, di essere il primo, anzi il solo responsabile della catastrofe in atto a Gaza. Questa dichiarazione coronava mesi di arresti compiuti dalle 8 branche dei servizi di sicurezza dell’ANP di centinaia, se non migliaia, di studenti dell’università di Bir Zeit (e non solo), e l’esecuzione mirata di alcuni capi delle milizie attive in Cisgiordania contro l’Idf e i coloni (1).
La speciale viltà di questa azione di “pacificazione” svolta da Pechino (e prima ancora da Mosca, che con Lavrov si era mossa sulla stessa linea) è che essa arriva nel momento di massima difficoltà della resistenza palestinese, provata da quasi un anno di combattimenti, e di quanto mai drammatica emergenza per la popolazione di Gaza – dove è tornata perfino la poliomielite e le risorse d’acqua necessarie alla sopravvivenza sono state distrutte al 94%. Invece di colpire Israele con una qualche forma di boicottaggio economico o militare, l’“asse del bene”, che ha lasciato l’economia e l’esercito sionisti totalmente indenni da qualsiasi azione di disturbo, spinge le componenti più determinate del popolo palestinese a riappacificarsi con quell’ANP che della macchina di oppressione sionista è la quinta colonna.
Non è la prima volta che un potente attore esterno alla Palestina impone l’unità di tutte le fazioni e la costituzione di un governo di unità nazionale. Per limitarci ai fatti di questo secolo, è accaduto già nel 2007 su iniziativa dell’Arabia saudita dopo l’inattesa vittoria di Hamas alle uniche elezioni democratiche fin qui tenute in Palestina. Solennemente firmato alla Mecca da Abu Mazen e Khaled Meshaal l’8 febbraio 2007, l’accordo di “unità nazionale” durò appena tre mesi. Lo affossò il furioso sabotaggio interno ed esterno – in quegli stessi mesi, tanto per dirne una, i generali statunitensi dell’amministrazione Bush facevano il via vai tra Gerusalemme, Gerico e Ramallah per addestrare la guardia presidenziale e gli altri corpi della repressione facenti capo all’ANP a dare la caccia ai militanti della resistenza, tutti accomunati dall’accusa di “terrorismo”, a partire da Hamas. Alla fine di quei tre mesi di forzata “unità nazionale”, scoppiò a Gaza lo scontro armato tra la fazione di Fatah facente capo a M. Dahlan, la più asservita agli Stati Uniti e alle potenze europee, da un lato, Hamas e il resto delle forze militanti dall’altro, con la sconfitta definitiva dei primi e la loro espulsione da Gaza.
Difficile dire se questa intesa avrà vita più lunga. Ci sono solidi motivi per dubitarne. A quel che si sa, fino all’ultimo, temendo le reazioni dei suoi protettori e patroni, Israele e Stati Uniti (e, immaginiamo, temendo soprattutto il taglio dei cospicui fondi), Abu Mazen appariva contrario ad inviare un suo rappresentante. E quanto alle forze strenuamente impegnate nella resistenza, esse hanno accettato di essere in una compagnia così sgradita, perché nutrono la speranza, una speranza piena di dubbi, di poter ricevere un qualche aiuto dal colosso cinese almeno ad ottenere una tregua nei combattimenti. Del resto, se si guarda la cerimonia della firma dell’accordo e la foto di rito, si vedrà che non ci sono sorrisi, l’aria generale è piuttosto lugubre… (2).
Come che sia, è evidente che, al pari di 17 anni fa, l’intesa di Pechino 2024 ripropone come percorso da compiere la via tracciata dall’ONU che Israele, dal 1948 ad oggi, ha reso materialmente impraticabile, anzi ha definitivamente cancellato. Affermare che l’obiettivo è “creare uno stato palestinese indipendente con capitale al-Quds in conformità con le risoluzioni internazionali, in particolare 181 e 2334, e garantire il diritto al ritorno”, o è una frase ingannatrice priva di qualsiasi contenuto reale, oppure sta a significare la distruzione dello stato coloniale di Israele, o – quanto meno – la sua espulsione da un’enorme quantità di territorio palestinese occupato dal 1948 in poi attraverso un’infinità di azioni rimaste sistematicamente impunite. E chi dovrebbe garantire questo risultato? La Cina e la Russia, che sono state a guardare impassibili per decenni l’espansione della colonizzazione sionista della Palestina, anche quando a Pechino governava Mao e a Mosca esisteva ancora l’URSS? Quella Cina e quella Russia che in questi decenni, proprio mentre avveniva la continua espansione dell’occupazione, sviluppavano legami strutturali sempre più solidi con Israele (la Russia diventando la prima fonte di nuovi cittadini per Israele, la Cina diventando il secondo investitore estero in Israele), anche – specie la Cina – sul piano della “lotta al terrorismo”? Crederlo, è sostenere qualcosa pur sapendo che non è vera.
Eppure Hussam Badran, un membro dell’ufficio politico di Hamas, nel lodare la Dichiarazione di Pechino come “un ulteriore passo positivo verso il raggiungimento dell’unità nazionale palestinese”, ci ha tenuto a sottolineare che l’importanza di questo passo deriva dal “peso internazionale della Cina” e dalla sua “statura”, che è “qualcosa di cui abbiamo bisogno come palestinesi per affrontare le politiche unilaterali perseguite dagli Stati Uniti per quanto riguarda la causa palestinese”. Significativa la sua ulteriore precisazione: “questa dichiarazione arriva in un momento importante in cui il nostro popolo sta affrontando il genocidio, specialmente nella striscia di Gaza”. È da questa immensa, tragica difficoltà che deriva la decisione di Hamas di piegarsi al volere di Pechino che è poi, 17 anni dopo, lo stesso della petrolmonarchia saudita, salvo che in questi 17 anni la cricca di profittatori di Abu Mazen ha perfezionato con un cinismo illimitato la sua funzione di cane da guardia dello stato sionista e degli interessi occidentali. Quando Wang Yi ribadisce con forza che l’OLP è “l’unico rappresentante legittimo del popolo palestinese”, fa un assist proprio a questa cricca di profittatori, a scapito delle forze impegnate nella resistenza anti-sionista. Queste, dal canto loro, sperano che il notevole peso specifico dell’accoppiata Cina-Russia possa comunque riuscire a controbilanciare il peso dell’asse Stati Uniti-UE. Può darsi che si crei una chance in più per una tregua, ma se si tiene presente la natura sociale iper-capitalistica della Cina d’oggi, i suoi forti legami economici con Israele, la sua intenzione di “stabilizzare” la regione medio-orientale senza dare seri scossoni al suo attuale ordine, la sua prudenza in materia di sostegno effettivo alle aspettative delle masse oppresse del mondo islamico (anche a causa della contraddizione interna costituita dagli uiguri) (3), e l’obiettivo finale della sua politica estera – strappare agli Stati Uniti il primato sul mercato mondiale –, è quanto mai probabile che questo investimento politico sarà sul lungo periodo, per la causa della liberazione nazionale e sociale palestinese, fallimentare. E lascerà chi lo ha fatto insieme ad Hamas con un pugno di mosche in mano.
Non è la prima volta che uno stato arabo o una qualche potenza esterna al mondo arabo prova a mettere sotto tutela la causa palestinese e la resistenza palestinese. Dal 1948 ci hanno provato a più riprese l’Egitto, la Giordania, l’Iraq, la Libia, la Siria, il Libano, la Russia, l’Algeria, gli Stati Uniti (con gli accordi di Oslo) e poi l’Arabia saudita, il Qatar, l’Iran. E sistematicamente la messa sotto controllo del popolo palestinese è fallita in quanto la macchina di oppressione e di sterminio sionista ha risposto a ciascuna di queste “sponsorizzazioni” con un di più di oppressione sui palestinesi, con un’estensione della propria colonizzazione e con l’allargamento del raggio delle proprie operazioni militari, aperte e coperte. Da sempre Israele, sicura della protezione di fatto della ”comunità internazionale” degli stati imperialisti e borghesi, si è rifiutata di fissare i propri confini, dichiarando solennemente il proprio programma di espansione coloniale illimitata sul frontespizio della Knesset dove è riportato il versetto biblico: “Darò alla tua stirpe questa terra, dal fiume d’Egitto al fiume d’Eufrate”.
Ma la messa sotto controllo del popolo palestinese e della sua resistenza è fallita anche perché davanti ai crescenti affondi della macchina coloniale sionista le masse oppresse e sfruttate della Palestina e della diaspora palestinese hanno ripetutamente rifiutato di arrendersi. Ed anche dopo i fallimentari “accordi di pace”, hanno ripreso la propria lotta, pur se in condizioni di esistenza e di resistenza sempre più estreme. Sicché quando la marcia del gambero della direzione nazionalista accentrata intorno ad al Fatah e Arafat si è conclusa con il naufragio totale degli “accordi di pace” (dopo i quali la condizione dei palestinesi è fortemente peggiorata) e con la doppia sottomissione di Fatah ad Israele e ai potentati arabi, è cominciata la stagione delle sollevazioni di massa. Questa stagione ha preso il via in modo spontaneo il 9 dicembre 1987 con l’“Intifada delle pietre” contro l’esercito occupante, protagonista una generazione di giovanissimi. È per effetto del suo impatto che Hamas, da organizzazione affiliata ai Fratelli musulmani dedita ad interventi di sostegno sociale, si trasforma in un movimento nazionalista militante; e che, dopo alcuni decenni, ha preso corpo la più massiccia azione offensiva di guerriglia mai compiuta dalla resistenza palestinese in oltre un secolo di battaglie contro i colonizzatori (il 7 ottobre 2023, “il diluvio di al-Aqsa”). Questa lunga stagione vede lo spostamento dell’epicentro di questa resistenza sempre più in profondità nelle masse giovanili spossessate di tutto, e perciò pronte a tutto pur di non morire lentamente soffocate dalla stretta mortale dell’assedio alla striscia di Gaza.
Hamas è solo la maggiore, ma non l’unica, espressione di questo secondo tempo della resistenza palestinese che vede un attivismo di massa decisamente superiore alla fase dominata da al-Fatah (1964-1987), e ne è in certa misura condizionata. Ma per la sua natura sociale interclassista e per la sua ideologia nazionalista non è riuscita a dare, non ha potuto (né voluto) dare, a questo superiore e radicale attivismo di massa quella proiezione organizzata verso le enormi sollevazioni di massa avvenute negli anni 2011-2012 e 2018-2020 in tanti paesi arabi, che avrebbe potuto sottrarre al suo isolamento la meravigliosa capacità di resistenza di questo popolo che abbiamo definito, ed è, il più proletarizzato e fiero della terra. Hamas ha più volte dichiarato di apprezzare il contributo dei “popoli liberi della terra” e del movimento internazionale di solidarietà con la causa palestinese che si è formato nei paesi arabi e ai quattro angoli del mondo, ma ha continuato e continua a ricercare prioritariamente un appoggio in forze statali per le quali la causa della liberazione palestinese è soltanto una carta da giocare per i propri interessi, e non una causa da difendere ad ogni costo.
Del resto Hamas ha fatto ad Israele ripetute proposte di tregua, anche di lunghissime tregue (riprese dal modello coranico) – la prima è del settembre 1997, e parlava addirittura di trenta anni; l’ultima proposta formale è del 2010, e parlava di 10-20 anni; il 24 novembre 2012, quando sembrava vicina una tregua di 15 anni, ancora una volta proposta da Hamas, Israele provvide ad assassinare il comandante delle brigate al Qassam al Ja’bari. Tutte queste proposte contenevano sotto traccia, e tuttavia ben visibile, il riconoscimento dello stato di Israele. Senonché, come ha ribadito ieri a Washington Netanyahu, la dirigenza sionista ritiene di avere il diritto divino ad uno stato senza confini nella “terra degli ebrei”. Mentre sta macellando vivi milioni di palestinesi, proclama con spudorato razzismo di rappresentare la civiltà contro la barbarie, e dunque che mai uno stato palestinese potrà avere spazio su quella terra accanto allo stato del “popolo eletto”.
Questo colonialismo oltranzista, genocidario, che ha dietro di sé, e sa di avere dietro di sé, l’intero establishment dell’imperialismo occidentale; che è, e sa di essere, l’ultima parola di un Occidente che cerca di salvarsi dal suo irreversibile declino con il terrore e la guerra; non lascia ai palestinesi nessun’altra strada se non la resistenza, il “combattimento per la vita e per la morte”, quella intrapresa dalla popolazione di Gaza anche a costo di indicibili sofferenze. Ecco perché è osceno mettersi a fare la lezioncina ai palestinesi su “come resistere” – c’è da chiedersi semmai, con ammirazione, come facciano tuttora a resistere! Ed è altrettanto meschino rappresentare Hamas come un forza “nelle mani” della Cina, quindi una proiezione della politica di potenza cinese, come ieri la si è rappresentata (dicendo il falso) quale protesi dell’Arabia saudita o dell’Iran, per negare alla lotta delle masse palestinesi il carattere di autentico movimento anti-coloniale.
Quali che siano le caratteristiche sociali e i limiti politici delle forze che guidano la resistenza palestinese, ne abbiamo parlato più volte, l’insufficienza più grave non è certo dei palestinesi, è quella del movimento proletario sia nelle metropoli occidentali che nello stesso mondo arabo. In diversi paesi occidentali, più che in Italia, c’è stato un forte movimento di solidarietà con i palestinesi e di protesta contro i governi occidentali, soprattutto di giovani, che però non è riuscito a costringerli a togliere il sostegno a Israele; mentre la classe operaia dei paesi occidentali, che tranne piccole minoranze non si è opposta alla partecipazione dei propri governi al massacro in Ucraina, è rimasta in larghissima parte passiva anche sulla Palestina, con alcune eccezioni tra i lavoratori dei porti e della logistica, mancando così al suo compito: mettersi massicciamente di traverso alla macchina di guerra degli Stati Uniti, della Nato, dell’Unione Europea che è fondamentale nella prosecuzione del genocidio a Gaza e nella stabilizzazione del colonialismo di insediamento sionista. Ma anche il proletariato dei paesi arabi, represso dopo le rivolte dello scorso decennio, non ha trovato la forza di sollevarsi con la determinazione necessaria contro la complicità dei propri governi, accettando nella maggior parte dei casi – vedi la Giordania e l’Egitto – di non oltrepassare le “linee rosse” fissate dai rispettivi regimi. L’abbiamo ben presente, ma non per questo cambieremo direzione di intervento.
Per la nostra posizione di internazionalisti, la fragile e lugubre intesa di Pechino non cambia nulla. Eravamo per la liberazione nazionale e sociale delle masse oppresse palestinesi quando a guidarle erano al-Fatah e Arafat, alla cui abile demagogia mai demmo credito, anche a costo di essere ritenuti dei “grilli parlanti” – ma la dura realtà dei fatti, poi, ci ha dato ragione. Siamo più che mai oggi per la liberazione nazionale e sociale delle masse oppresse palestinesi, quale che possa essere la traiettoria politica di Hamas, per la semplice ragione che la lotta al colonialismo, in particolare la lotta al colonialismo occidentale, è parte integrante della lotta al “nostro” capitalismo, al nemico “in casa nostra”, all’infame governo Meloni e all’apparato statale di cui è espressione, che hanno le mani sporche del sangue palestinese. Ci bruciano i limiti quantitativi e qualitativi del movimento di solidarietà con il popolo palestinese e la resistenza palestinese fin qui determinatosi in Italia, ed è per questo che siamo già proiettati alle prossime iniziative.
Grideremo con ancora più forza per l’immediato e definitivo cessate il fuoco a Gaza, per l’immediata apertura delle frontiere di Gaza alla fornitura di cibo e di acqua sempre più indispensabili, per l’immediato rilascio di tutti i prigionieri politici. Quanto alla prospettiva, sappiamo che l’unica possibile soluzione della questione palestinese, la nascita di uno stato unico sulla terra di Palestina, laico e socialista, in cui convivano i nativi e quanti tra i cittadini ebrei di Israele vorranno restarci in pace con loro, parte di una Federazione di popoli del Medio Oriente liberi dalla dominazione imperialista, non è vicina. Ma nonostante le immani distruzioni che il mostro sionista ha prodotto negli ultimi mesi, è oggi più vicina di ieri per l’odio anti-sionista che Israele e i suoi protettori hanno moltiplicato nel mondo.
Post-scriptum
Abbiamo già ricevuto diverse reazioni a questo articolo, benché postato da poche ore. Alcune lo criticano per avere un impianto “ideologico”, lodano la funzione di Cina-Russia e la “svolta di Hamas” accostandola alla “svolta di Salerno” del 1944 (positiva, secondo loro) con la quale il PCI decise di entrare nei governi di unità nazionale che salvaguardarono la continuità del dominio della borghesia orfana del suo fascismo, svendendo in anticipo i sacrifici e le speranze che un settore combattivo di proletariato (e non solo) ripose nella Resistenza. Ci abbiamo appena scritto un libro sopra (“Antifascismo e lotta di classe nella resistenza”), e non ci ritorniamo. Precisiamo solo che non abbiamo elementi per parlare di una “svolta di Hamas”, e non ne abbiamo parlato. Avanziamo semplicemente l’ipotesi che si è indotta a questo passo, insieme con le altre organizzazioni della resistenza palestinese, per le enormi difficoltà proprie e della popolazione di Gaza dopo quasi un anno di terrificanti distruzioni e massacri, sperando di avere un qualche aiuto da Cina e Russia almeno nel conseguimento della tregua che Israele ha finora negato. E’ di questa condizione di estrema difficoltà che i governi di Cina e Russia stanno cinicamente profittando. Se si legge attentamente quello che abbiamo scritto, il nostro bersaglio sono loro, il cosiddetto “asse del bene” – e l’abbiamo fatto sulla base di fatti concreti di enorme portata quali la “fornitura” di una massa di nuovi cittadini ad Israele o di petrolio (da parte della Russia) e la massa di investimenti cinesi in Israele, molti proprio nel settore hi tech di controllo “anti-terroristico” della popolazione, per non parlare di tutto il resto – ma quale “ideologia”!?
Il compagno Marco B., invece, condividendo l’impianto della nostra critica a Cina e Russia (“di cui la più pulita ha la rogna”), ci ha fatto notare una lacuna della nostra analisi di Fatah. Perché se è certo che la cricca intorno ad Abu Mazen è quella che abbiamo descritto, c’è tuttavia una sezione di Fatah indipendente da essa che tuttora prende parte alla resistenza o la appoggia dall’interno delle carceri (Marwan Barghouti, ad esempio), ed è ad essa che Hamas e le altre formazioni più radicali guardano quando prospettano come positivo lo sforzo di ricomposizione dell’unità nazionale. Registriamo questo rilievo, e invitiamo le lettrici e i lettori che ne abbiano altri, a inviarceli. Non abbiamo alcuna pretesa di avere esaurito la questione. (Red.)

Beijing’s (and Moscow’s) dirty work at the expense of the Palestinian people
News comes from Beijing of an agreement between all the main Palestinian factions to “end the Palestinian national division: unify national efforts to confront aggression and stop the war of genocide”. The agreement was immediately hailed by the Tehran Times (we do not know, however, with how much conviction) as a success of the diplomacy of the “yellow dragon” that finally enters as a protagonist on the world political scene with a proposal for a solution to the “Palestinian question”.
In short, Xi Jin Ping’s China, which the wretched race of the campists considers the leader of the “axis of good”, has made it! He succeeded in pushing Hamas and the other forces of the strenuous Palestinian resistance to Israel’s genocidal action, to shake hands with the Abu Mazen clique, which is in fact a prosthesis of the Zionist killing machine. A few days ago Abu Mazen himself, in a statement that was a concentrate of pettiness, had accused Yahya Sinwar, that is, basically the armed resistance to the occupier, of being the first, indeed the only one responsible for the catastrophe taking place in Gaza. This statement crowned months of arrests made by the 8 branches of the PA security services of hundreds, if not thousands, of students from Bir Zeit University (and others) and the targeted execution of some militia leaders active in the West Bank against the IDF and the settlers (1).
The special cowardice of this “pacification” action carried out by Beijing (and before that by Moscow, which with Lavrov had moved along the same line) is that it comes at the moment of maximum difficulty of the Palestinian resistance, weary by almost a year of fighting, and of a very dramatic emergency for the population of Gaza – where even polio has returned and the water resources necessary for survival have been destroyed by 94%. Instead of hitting Israel with some form of economic or military boycott, the “axis of good”, which has left the Zionist economy and army totally unscathed from any disruptive action, targets the most decisive and resolute components of the Palestinian people.
It is not the first time that a powerful actor from outside Palestine has imposed the unity of all factions and the establishment of a government of national unity. To limit ourselves to the events of this century, it happened as early as 2007 after the unexpected victory of Hamas in the only democratic elections held so far in Palestine on the initiative of Saudi Arabia. Solemnly signed in Mecca by Abu Mazen and Khaled Meshaal on February 8, 2007, the “national unity” agreement lasted just three months. It was scuttled by furious internal and external sabotage – in those same months, for example, the US generals of the Bush administration were coming and going between Jerusalem, Jericho and Ramallah to train the presidential guard and the other bodies of repression headed by the PA to hunt down resistance militants, all united by the accusation of “terrorism”, starting with Hamas. At the end of those three months of forced “national unity”, an armed clash broke out in Gaza between the Fatah faction headed by M. Dahlan, the most subservient to the United States and the European powers, on the one hand, Hamas and the rest of the militant forces on the other, with the final defeat of the former and their expulsion from Gaza.
It is difficult to say whether this agreement will have a longer life. There are solid reasons to doubt it. As far as is known, until the very end, fearing the reactions of his protectors and patrons, Israel and the United States (and, we imagine, fearing above all the cut of the substantial funds), Abu Mazen appeared opposed to sending his representative. And as for the forces strenuously engaged in resistance, they have accepted to be in such unwelcome company, because they cherish the hope, a hope full of doubts, of being able to receive some help from the Chinese giant at least to obtain a truce in the fighting. After all, if you look at the signing ceremony of the agreement and the ritual photo, you will see that there are no smiles, the general air is rather gloomy… (2).
Be that as it may, it is clear that, as it was 17 years ago, the Beijing 2024 agreement re-proposes as a path to be taken the path traced by the UN that Israel, from 1948 to the present, has made materially impracticable, indeed has definitively cancelled. To claim that the goal is “to create an independent Palestinian state with al-Quds capital in accordance with international resolutions, in particular 181 and 2334, and to guarantee the right of return” is either a deceptive phrase devoid of any real content, or it means the destruction of the colonial state of Israel, or – at least – its expulsion from a huge amount of Palestinian territory occupied since 1948 through an infinite number of actions that have remained systematically unpunished. And who should guarantee this result? China and Russia, who have been watching impassively for decades the expansion of the Zionist colonization of Palestine, even when Mao ruled in Beijing and the USSR still existed in Moscow? That China and Russia that in recent decades, just as the continuous expansion of the occupation was taking place, developed increasingly extensive structural ties with Israel (Russia becoming the first source of new citizens for Israel, China becoming the second foreign investor in Israel), also – especially China – in terms of the “fight against terrorism”? To believe it, is to support something while knowing that it is not true.
Yet Hussam Badran, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, in praising the Beijing Declaration as “another positive step towards achieving Palestinian national unity,” was keen to point out that the importance of this step stems from China’s “international clout” and its “stature,” which is “something we need as Palestinians to address the unilateral policies pursued by the United States regarding the Palestinian cause.” His further clarification is significant: “this statement comes at an important time when our people are facing genocide, especially in the Gaza Strip”. It is from this immense, tragic difficulty that Hamas’ decision to bend to Beijing’s will derives which is then, 17 years later, the same as that of the Saudi petromonarchy, except that in these 17 years Abu Mazen’s clique of profiteers has perfected with unlimited cynicism its function as the fifth column of the Zionist state and Western interests. When Wang Yi strongly reiterates that the PLO is “the only legitimate representative of the Palestinian people”, he is giving an assist to this clique of profiteers, to the detriment of the forces engaged in the anti-Zionist resistance. These, for their part, hope that the considerable specific weight of the China-Russia pairing can still be able to counterbalance the weight of the United States-EU axis. It may be that in this way one more chance for a truce is created, but if one keeps in mind the hyper-capitalist social nature of China today, its strong economic ties with Israel, its intention to “stabilize” the Middle East region without seriously shaking its current order, its prudence in terms of effective support for the expectations of the oppressed masses of the Islamic world (also because of the internal contradiction constituted by the Uyghurs) (3), and the ultimate goal of its foreign policy – to wrest the primacy of the United States on the world market -, it is very likely that this political investment will be on the long run a failure for the cause of Palestinian national and social liberation. And it will leave those who did it together with Hamas with a handful of flies in their hands.
It is not the first time that an Arab state or some power outside the Arab world has tried to put the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian resistance under protection. Since 1948, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, Russia, Algeria, the United States (with the Oslo Accords) and then Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iran have tried on several occasions. And systematically the control of the Palestinian people has failed as the Zionist machine of oppression and extermination has responded to each of these “sponsorships” with an extra oppression of the Palestinians, with an extension of its colonization and with the widening of the range of its military open and covert operations. Israel, sure of the de facto protection of the “international community” of imperialist and bourgeois states, has always refused to fix its borders, solemnly declaring its program of unlimited colonial expansion on the front page of the Knesset with the biblical verse: “I will give this land to your descendants, from the river of Egypt to the river of Euphrates.”
But the control of the Palestinian people and their resistance has also failed because in the face of the growing lunges of the Zionist colonial machine, the oppressed and exploited masses of Palestine and the Palestinian diaspora have repeatedly refused to surrender. And even after the failed “peace agreements”, they have resumed their struggle, albeit in conditions of existence and resistance that are increasingly extreme. So when the shrimp march of the nationalist leadership centered around Fatah and Arafat ended with the total shipwreck of the “peace accords” (after which the condition of the Palestinians greatly worsened) and with the double submission of Fatah to Israel and the Arab potentates, the season of mass uprisings began. This season kicked off spontaneously on December 9, 1987 with the “Intifada of the Stones” against the occupying army, starring a generation of very young people. It is as a result of its impact that Hamas, from an organization affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood dedicated to social support interventions, is transformed into a militant nationalist movement; and that, after a few decades, the most massive offensive guerrilla action ever carried out by the Palestinian resistance in over a century of battles against the colonizers took shape (on October 7, 2023, “the al-Aqsa deluge”). This long season sees the epicenter of this resistance shifted deeper and deeper into the masses of young people dispossessed of everything, and therefore ready to do anything in order not to die slowly, suffocated by the deadly grip of the siege of the Gaza Strip.
Hamas is only the largest, but not the only, expression of this second phase of Palestinian resistance that sees mass activism decidedly superior to the phase dominated by al-Fatah (1964-1987), and is to a certain extent conditioned by it. But due to its interclassist social nature and its nationalist ideology, it has not been able (nor willing) to give, to this superior and radical mass activism that organized projection towards the enormous mass uprisings that took place in the years 2011-2012 and 2018-2020 in many Arab countries, which could have taken the wonderful capacity for resistance of this people out of its isolation – a people which we have defined, and is, the most proletarianized and proud on earth. Hamas has repeatedly stated that it appreciates the contribution of the “free peoples of the earth” and the international movement of solidarity with the Palestinian cause that has been formed in Arab countries and in the four corners of the world, but it has continued and continues to seek priority support from state forces for which the cause of Palestinian liberation is only a card to play for their own interests, and not a cause to be defended at all costs.
After all, Hamas has made repeated proposals to Israel for truce, even for very long truces (taken from the Koranic model) – the first is from September 1997 and even spoke of thirty years; the last formal proposal was made in 2010, and spoke of 10-20 years; on November 24, 2012, when a 15-year truce, once again proposed by Hamas, seemed imminent, Israel proceeded to assassinate al Ja’bari, the commander of the al Qassam brigades. All these proposals contained under the radar, and yet clearly visible, the recognition of the state of Israel. Except, as Netanyahu reiterated yesterday in Washington, the Zionist leadership believes it has the divine right to a state without borders in the “land of the Jews”. While it is slaughtering millions of Palestinians lives, it shamelessly proclaims that it is civilization against barbarism, and therefore that a Palestinian state will never have a place on that land next to the state of the “chosen people.”
This extremist, genocidal colonialism, which has behind it, and knows it has behind it, the entire establishment of Western imperialism; which is and knows that it is the last word of a West that is trying to save itself from its irreversible decline with terror and war; it leaves the Palestinians no other way than resistance, the “fight for life and death”, the one hired by the population of Gaza even at the cost of unspeakable suffering. This is why it is obscene to start lecturing the Palestinians on “how to resist” – one wonders, if anything, with admiration how they still resist! And it is equally mean to represent Hamas as a force “in the hands” of China, a projection of Chinese power politics, just as yesterday it was represented (falsely) as a prosthesis of Saudi Arabia or Iran, all useful to deny the struggle of the Palestinian masses the character of an authentic anti-colonial movement.
Whatever the social characteristics and political limitations of the forces leading the Palestinian resistance, we have spoken about them several times, the most serious insufficiency is certainly not of the Palestinians, it is that of the proletarian movement both in the Western metropolises and in the Arab world itself. In several Western countries, more than in Italy, there has been a strong movement of solidarity with the Palestinians and protest against Western governments, especially of young people, which, however, has not succeeded in forcing them to withdraw support for Israel; while the working class of Western countries which, except for small minorities, did not oppose the participation of their governments in the massacre in Ukraine, remained largely passive even on Palestine, with some exceptions among the workers of the ports and logistics, thus failing in its task: to massively get in the way of the US war machine, of NATO, the European Union, which is crucial in the continuation of the genocide in Gaza and the stabilization of Zionist settler-colonialism. But even the proletariat of the Arab countries, repressed after the revolts of the last decade, has not found the strength to rise up with the necessary determination against the complicity of their governments, accepting in most cases – see Jordan and Egypt – not to cross the “red lines” set by their respective regimes. We are well aware of this, but this does not mean that we will change the direction of intervention.
For our position as internationalists, Beijing’s fragile and gloomy agreement changes nothing. We were for the national and social liberation of the oppressed Palestinian masses when they were led by al-Fatah and Arafat, whose skilful demagoguery we never believed, even at the cost of being considered “talking crickets” – but the harsh reality of the facts, then, proved us right. We are more than ever today for the national and social liberation of the oppressed Palestinian masses, whatever the political trajectory of Hamas, for the simple reason that the fight against colonialism, in particular the fight against Western colonialism, is an integral part of the fight against “our” capitalism, the enemy “at home”, the infamous Meloni government and the state apparatus of which it is an expression, who have Palestinian blood on their hands. We suffer for the quantitative and qualitative limits of the movement of solidarity with the Palestinian people and the Palestinian resistance that has been established so far in Italy, and that is why we are already projected towards the next initiatives.
We will cry out even more loudly for an immediate and definitive ceasefire in Gaza, for the immediate opening of Gaza’s borders to the supply of increasingly indispensable food and water, for the immediate release of all political prisoners. As for the prospect, we know that the only possible solution to the Palestinian question, the birth of a single state on the land of Palestine, secular and socialist, in which the autochtonous and those among the Jewish citizens of Israel who want to remain in peace with them coexist, part of a “Federation of free Soviet peoples of the Middle East”, is not near. But despite the immense destruction that the Zionist monster has produced in recent months, it is closer today than yesterday given the anti-Zionist hatred that Israel and its patrons have multiplied in the world.
Post-scriptum
We have already received several reactions to this article, although it was posted a few hours ago. Some accuse it of having an “ideological” structure, and praise the function of China-Russia and the “turn of Hamas” by comparing it to the “turn of Salerno” of 1944 (positive, according to them) with which the PCI decided to enter the governments of national unity that safeguarded the continuity of the rule of the bourgeoisie orphaned of its fascism, selling off in advance the sacrifices and hopes that a combative sector of the proletariat (and not only) placed in the Resistance. We have just written a book about it (“Antifascism and class struggle in the resistance”), and we will not go back to it. We only specify that we have no elements to speak of a “Hamas turn”, and we have not talked about it. We are simply advancing the hypothesis that this step has been taken, together with the other organizations of the Palestinian resistance, for the enormous difficulties of themselves and the people of Gaza after almost a year of terrifying destruction and massacres, hoping to have some help from China and Russia at least in achieving the truce that Israel has so far denied. It is this extremely difficult condition that the governments of China and Russia are cynically taking advantage of. If you read carefully what we have written, our target is them, the so-called “axis of good” – and we have done so on the basis of concrete facts of enormous magnitude such as the “supply” of a mass of new citizens to Israel or oil (by Russia) and the mass of Chinese investments in Israel, many precisely in the hi-tech sector of “anti-terrorist” control of the population, not to mention everything else – but what “ideology”!?
Comrade Marco B., on the other hand, sharing the structure of our criticism of China and Russia (“of which the best has the mange”), pointed out to us a defect in our analysis of Fatah. Because if it is certain that the clique around Abu Mazen is the one we have described, there is nevertheless a section of Fatah independent of it that still takes part in the resistance or supports it from inside the prisons (Marwan Barghouti, for example),
